About Rancho Bernardo
Rancho Bernardo is a master-planned community of roughly 48,000 people in the northeastern corner of San Diego, built from the ground up beginning in 1962 on Rancho Bernardo land grant terrain east of the I-15. The city is not incorporated on its own — it sits inside San Diego city limits — but it functions as a self-contained suburb with distinct neighborhoods, its own business park, and a strong sense of geographic identity. The western edge runs along the I-15 from the Bernardo Center Drive interchange south to Poway Road. The eastern edge reaches toward the Rancho Bernardo community park and the open space preserve.

The Local Scene
Seven Oaks, Oaks North, Bernardo Heights, Westwood, and Chapala are the primary residential neighborhoods, along with the newer Santaluz and The Crosby to the east. The RB Business Park on the west side of the 15 anchors the commercial economy with Sony, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, General Atomics, and Northrop Grumman as anchor tenants. We cover every address in the community, from the guard-gated enclaves to the business park parking structures.
Wildfire Zone Awareness: Rancho Bernardo
Rancho Bernardo sits in a documented high wildfire hazard zone. The 2007 Witch Creek Fire destroyed more than 300 homes in the community and prompted the largest evacuation in San Diego city history at that time. The terrain east of the I-15 — scrub-covered canyons, ridge-top homes, and the open space preserve buffer — creates the same fire corridor conditions today that existed in 2007.
What this means for locks and safes:
Evacuation drills and actual evacuations surface a recurring problem: residents who cannot access a safe under stress, who have forgotten combinations not used in months, or who discover that a digital keypad safe locked out after a power surge during the emergency. We service safes for quick-access reliability — combination changes to something memorable, keypad battery replacement, and backup key overrides where the model supports it.
Post-fire rebuild rekeys are a separate category. Homes that survived the 2007 fire perimeter are now 18-plus years old with original hardware. Many of those cylinders are past their service life. We do full exterior hardware assessments and rekey packages for homes that have never had the locks touched since construction.
For residents in the high-hazard zone east of the business park, we recommend keeping a grab-and-go key set — house and car — in a fireproof location separate from your daily keys.

Housing Stock and Door Hardware in Rancho Bernardo
Rancho Bernardo's master-plan development history creates a predictable hardware map. The original 1960s and 1970s phases used Kwikset and Schlage spec hardware that is now 50-plus years old. Later phases from the 1980s through the 2000s ran Schlage B-series and F-series as the tract standard. The post-2007 rebuilds in the wildfire footprint used contemporary hardware including smart-lock-ready preps and Grade 1 deadbolts.
1960s-1970s original phases (Seven Oaks, Oaks North early sections). Kwikset tubular bored cylinders, worn springs, pins that have been re-pinned by multiple owners, and keys that have been copied so many times the cuts have drifted. Rekey volume in the 55-plus communities is driven partly by estate transitions and partly by the plain fact that the hardware is past its service life.
1980s-1990s tract expansion (Bernardo Heights, Westwood, Westwood II). Schlage B60N deadbolts and F-series levers, still mechanically sound in most cases, but combination security is gone after decades of copying. Standard rekey restores control for a fraction of new hardware cost.
2000s custom and Santaluz/Crosby phases. Better spec hardware from the start — Grade 1 Schlage and Kwikset Signature, some European mortise entry systems on the custom lots. Rekey volume here is driven by home sales and tenant turnover rather than wear.
Post-2007 wildfire rebuilds. Contemporary hardware, smart-lock-ready preps, and in many cases the owners upgraded to keypad entry during the rebuild. We service and rekey all of these.

What Rancho Bernardo Customers Say
5 out of 5 stars"Left my fob on my desk at the Sony campus and walked out to a locked car in the parking structure at 6 PM on a Friday. Called Tim's from the elevator lobby. Tech was at the structure entrance in under 20 minutes, got me in without a mark on the door, and handed me a quote for a spare key before he left. Scheduled the spare for Monday morning. Problem solved before the weekend started."
5 out of 5 stars"My mom is 78 and lives alone in Oaks North. Her car "wouldn't start" three times in two months. Turned out the fob battery kept dying and she didn't know you could hold the dead fob to the start button. Tim's came out, swapped the battery, walked her through the whole push-to-start process twice, and programmed a spare for me to keep. Patient, clear, and no upsell. Exactly what she needed."
5 out of 5 stars"Just closed on a house in Seven Oaks and wanted every lock rekeyed before we moved in. Tim's handled five exterior cylinders, set up a single master key for the whole house, and walked me through which hardware was worth keeping versus swapping out. Done inside two hours. Guard at the gate had already seen the van before I could call ahead."
