Car Key Cutting in San Diego
Mobile car key cutting service. We come to you and cut a new key on the spot. No towing, no dealership trip.
Professional Car Key Cutting
Our mobile unit carries professional key cutting machines and a stock of over 500 key blanks including Ilco and Silca blanks covering standard mechanical, laser-cut sidewinder, and high-security automotive keyways for domestic, Asian, and European vehicles from 1990 to current year. We cut to factory specifications on-site, so your new key fits both the door lock and the ignition without any filing or adjusting.
Cutting Keys Without the Original
Lost your only key? No problem. We offer three methods to get you a working key with no original required: cutting by VIN code (we pull the factory key code from your vehicle identification number), Lishi lock decoding (we read the cut depths directly from your lock cylinder), or duplicating from an existing key if you have a spare. All three methods are performed at your vehicle, wherever it sits.

Types of Car Keys We Cut

Standard Edge-Cut Key
The traditional cut-and-go mechanical key used on most vehicles built before 2000 and many economy models through the mid-2000s. Cut along the edge of the blade with a standard code machine. Fast, inexpensive, and reliable. Does not include a transponder chip, so programming is not required after cutting.

Laser-Cut Sidewinder Key
A high-security key cut along the center of the blade with a distinctive wavy or winding pattern. Used widely on European brands and many newer domestic and Asian vehicles. Requires a specialized laser-cut machine. Fits a more precise lock cylinder, making unauthorized duplication at hardware stores impossible.

High-Security Automotive Key
Keys for vehicles with factory high-security lock cylinders including some Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes models. Cut on dedicated high-security machines using restricted key blanks. These keys often pair with a transponder chip that must be programmed separately, but the mechanical cut is always the first step.

Emergency and Valet Key
A basic mechanical key cut to open the door but not start the vehicle, or an emergency spare cut from your key code when your primary key is lost. Valet keys are common on luxury models and let you leave a limited-function key with a parking attendant without providing ignition or trunk access.

How We Cut Your Key
Code CuttingCut by Code (VIN-Based)
We use your vehicle identification number to retrieve the factory key code from our reference database. The code tells us the exact cut depths for every position on your key. We then program these depths into our cutting machine and produce a blade that matches the factory specification precisely. This method works even when you have no key at all, making it the go-to option for all-keys-lost situations.
DuplicationDuplicate from Existing Key
If you have a working key, duplicating it is the fastest and most affordable option. We trace your original on our duplication machine and transfer the cut pattern to a new blank. We always inspect the original for wear before copying so we do not bake in any errors caused by a worn blade. A fresh duplicate is sharper and easier on your lock cylinder than a heavily used original.
Lock DecodeDecode the Lock (Lishi Method)
When no key and no code record is available, we insert a Lishi decoder tool directly into your door lock cylinder and read the cut depths from the wafer positions. The decoder maps each position precisely so we can produce a code-equivalent cut on the machine. This technique works on most common keyways and lets us create a key from nothing using only the information already inside your lock.

Brands We Cover

Domestic
GM, Ford, Chrysler, Jeep, Ram, Cadillac, ChevroletAmerican vehicles typically use high-volume keyways with well-documented factory codes. Standard and laser-cut blanks are stocked for virtually every domestic model from 1990 forward. GM B-series, Ford H-series, and Chrysler Y-series keyways are among the most common we cut.

Asian
Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Subaru, MazdaJapanese and Korean manufacturers use a range of keyways from simple TOY-series cuts on older Toyotas to high-security HON66 and TOY48 profiles on late-model Hondas and Lexus vehicles. We stock blanks for all common Asian keyways and carry Lishi decoders for the most popular profiles.

European
Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Land RoverEuropean vehicles rely heavily on laser-cut sidewinder keys with HU66, HU101, and HU162 profiles being among the most common. These require dedicated laser-cut machines and specific blanks. We carry the equipment and inventory to cut European laser keys on-site without a dealership visit.

Car Key Cutting Pricing
Standard Edge-Cut
$65 - $120Mechanical key for domestic and older Asian vehicles. Price includes blank and cutting. Transponder chip programming billed separately if needed.
Laser-Cut Sidewinder
$120 - $200High-security laser-cut key for most European brands and many newer vehicles. Requires specialized equipment. Programming billed separately.
High-Security / European
$175 - $300+Restricted-blank high-security keys for BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and select luxury models. Price reflects blank cost and precision cutting requirements.
Code-cutting from VIN adds a small research fee on some vehicles. All pricing includes on-site service with no trip charge in most of our coverage area. A locksmith-cut key with programming typically costs 40 to 60 percent less than a dealer replacement.

Coastal Key and Lock Care
Salt air accelerates corrosion on metal key blades, particularly along the Ventura County coastline from Port Hueneme to Oxnard and along the San Diego waterfront. A corroded blade wears your lock tumblers faster and is more prone to breaking. Here is what we see and what helps.

Key Blank Material Matters
Nickel-silver blanks (the standard for quality automotive keys) resist coastal corrosion better than cheaper nickel-plated steel blanks. We use nickel-silver stock for all our automotive cuts. If a hardware store cut your key on a steel blank, that is likely why it is showing rust sooner than expected.

Rinse and Dry After Beach Days
A quick rinse with fresh water followed by air drying removes salt deposits before they can work into the blade surface. Avoid leaving keys in a wet pocket or at the bottom of a beach bag for extended periods.

Do Not Use a Corroded Key
A blade with visible surface corrosion or pitting should be replaced before it damages your lock cylinder. Corroded cuts are also slightly oversized, increasing the force needed to turn the ignition, which accelerates ignition cylinder wear over time.

Key Cutting Pro Tips

Always Have a Spare
The single most effective thing you can do is get a duplicate cut while you still have a working key. Cutting from an existing key is faster and cheaper than any all-keys-lost method.

Copy from Your Best Key
If you have multiple copies, bring the newest or least-used key as the source for duplication. Worn originals pass their wear on to the copy, which can cause the duplicate to feel stiff or bind in the lock.

Hardware Store Copies Are a Gamble
Mass-market key cutting kiosks and hardware store machines are calibrated for residential locksets and low-volume automotive use. They often produce copies with tolerances loose enough to cause ignition binding or door lock wear. A professional code machine produces a factory-spec cut every time.

A Worn Key Damages Your Ignition
An over-worn key blade rocks inside the ignition cylinder, putting lateral stress on the wafers. Over time this rounds out the wafer cuts and causes the cylinder to stick or slip. If your key is hard to turn, have it replaced before you damage the ignition.

Keep Your Keychain Light
A heavy keychain puts constant downward pressure on your ignition cylinder while driving. This accelerates cylinder wear over thousands of ignition cycles. A lean keychain with only the keys you use daily is better for your car.

Know Your Key Type Before You Call
Check whether your key has a transponder chip (most vehicles after 1998), a proximity push-to-start fob, or a plain mechanical blade. Key cutting alone covers the mechanical blade. If your vehicle requires chip programming, we handle that as a separate step and can do both in the same visit.

Before You Call
Year, Make, and Model
The year tells us which key blank series applies. Make and model narrow it to the specific keyway and cut profile. Without this we cannot pre-select your blank.
Do You Have an Existing Key?
Tell us whether you have a working key to duplicate, a non-working key we can use for reference, or no key at all. This determines which cutting method we use and affects the price.
Your VIN
Your 17-character vehicle identification number is on the dashboard at the base of the windshield and on your registration. Having it ready lets us pull your factory key code immediately and speeds up the service.
Vehicle Location
Tell us the exact address where the car is parked. If you are at a business, mall, or parking structure, include the level or section. We come to you, so the more specific the better.
