A time lock prevents the vault from opening until a preset time of day (for example, the vault cannot open before 8:00 AM). A time-delay lock requires a waiting period after the combination is entered (for example, a 10-minute delay between entering the code and the vault opening). Time locks control when the vault can be accessed. Time-delay locks create a forced waiting period as an anti-robbery measure. Many vaults use both.

Group 1 is a UL 768 rating for combination locks. Group 1 locks have 1,000,000 usable combinations and are tested to resist 20 person-hours of expert manipulation attack. They are the standard for bank vaults, high-value commercial vaults, and any application where insurance carriers require a high-security mechanical lock. Group 1 locks cost more than Group 2 locks but provide significantly greater security.

Salt air causes corrosion on springs, gear trains, and electrical contacts inside vault locks. Corroded springs lose tension and cause inconsistent lock operation. Corroded gears in time locks cause inaccurate timekeeping. Corroded electrical contacts cause intermittent failures in electronic locks. Regular maintenance with appropriate lubricants and corrosion inhibitors prevents these failures.

Yes. Although Mosler was acquired by Diebold in 2001 and original Mosler parts are increasingly scarce, many Mosler vaults remain in active service. We maintain Mosler vault door hardware, source compatible replacement parts, and upgrade Mosler vault locks to current UL-listed models from S&G and Kaba Mas.

Bank examiners typically review combination change records (dates and lock types), time lock maintenance logs, dual-control compliance verification, and vault lock UL ratings. We provide documentation that addresses all of these requirements. The specific format depends on whether your examiner is from the FDIC, OCC, or NCUA, and we format accordingly.

Never use WD-40, 3-in-1 oil, or general-purpose lubricants on vault locks. Vault lock manufacturers specify their own lubricants. S&G recommends their #39 oil for mechanical locks. Kaba Mas electronic locks should not be lubricated on the electronic components at all. For time lock movements, we use clock oil rated for precision instruments. For bolt work, we use PTFE-based dry lubricant that does not attract dust or debris.

Yes. Time lock failures are one of the most common vault lockout causes. Mechanical time lock movements can stop due to worn mainsprings, contaminated lubricant, or physical shock. Electronic time locks fail due to dead batteries or circuit board failures. We diagnose the time lock issue and open the vault using methods appropriate to the lock and door type.

Quarterly for high-traffic bank and commercial vaults, especially in coastal areas. Semi-annually for lower-traffic vaults in climate-controlled environments. Annually at minimum for any vault. Time locks should be serviced at least annually regardless of traffic. Your insurance carrier may specify a maintenance frequency as a policy condition.

Dual-control means two different people each hold a separate combination, and both combinations must be entered to open the vault. Neither person can access the vault alone. This is required by the Bank Protection Act for financial institutions and by some insurance carriers for high-value vaults. A relocker is a spring-loaded mechanism inside a vault door that permanently engages the bolt work if the lock is attacked. Vault doors typically have multiple relockers (glass, mechanical, and thermal). A triggered relocker makes the vault extremely difficult and expensive to open. All of our vault service procedures are designed to avoid triggering relockers. If a relocker has been triggered (by an attempted break-in, for example), we can still open the vault, but the process is significantly more involved.
