Types of Key Fobs We Replace

Standard Remote Fob (RKE Fob)

Standard Remote Fob (RKE Fob)

A standalone keyless entry remote that controls lock, unlock, panic, and trunk functions without starting the car. The fob communicates with your vehicle's receiver module using one-way RF transmission at either 315 MHz (most North American vehicles) or 433 MHz (many European imports). The remote does not contain a transponder chip, so it handles convenience functions only. A separate mechanical or transponder key is required to start the vehicle.

Common on:Honda Civic and Accord pre-2013, Toyota Camry pre-2012, Nissan Altima pre-2007, most GM vehicles pre-2010, Ford F-150 pre-2011 with separate key fobs
Typical cost with us:$80 to $150 programmed on-site
Known issues: Known issues: RF receiver module failure on high-mileage GM trucks causes intermittent response; Honda fobs are frequently counterfeited with weak transmitters that lose range within months; button membrane deterioration on Toyota fobs from the early 2000s is common in coastal climates.
Smart Key Fob (Proximity / Push-to-Start)

Smart Key Fob (Proximity / Push-to-Start)

A proximity key that communicates with your vehicle via two-way low-frequency (125 kHz LF) transmission for passive entry detection and a UHF channel (315 or 433 MHz) for button presses. The vehicle continuously broadcasts a low-power field; when the smart key enters range, it authenticates via encrypted rolling code and the door handles become capacitive touch-sensitive. Push-to-start then allows engine start with the brake pedal held. Smart keys contain a transponder backup chip that allows emergency starts if the battery dies. Programming requires dealer-level OBDII access and is the most complex fob type we handle.

Common on:Toyota Camry, RAV4, Highlander 2013+; Honda Accord, CR-V, Pilot 2014+; Nissan Altima, Rogue, Murano with Intelligent Key; Ford Fusion, Escape, F-150 2017+ with Intelligent Access; Chevrolet Malibu, Equinox 2016+; most Hyundai and Kia models 2016+; BMW, Mercedes, and Audi across most current lineups
Typical cost with us:$150 to $350 programmed on-site depending on make
Known issues: Known issues: Relay amplification theft (relay attack) targeting Keyless Entry vehicles is increasingly common; Toyota Generation 3 smart keys lose signal in direct sunlight due to battery drain; Ford PEPS (Passive Entry Passive Start) antenna failures cause ghost unlocking; Nissan Intelligent Key requires specific ignition cycling sequence or programming fails.
Remote Head Key (Integrated Fob)

Remote Head Key (Integrated Fob)

A physical key blade with the fob electronics and buttons built directly into the key head. The blade handles mechanical ignition and door operation, a transponder chip handles immobilizer authentication at 125 kHz, and the RF transmitter handles keyless entry at 315 or 433 MHz. The integrated design makes remote head keys more robust than carrying a separate fob, but also more expensive to replace since the entire unit must be sourced and both the transponder and remote must be programmed.

Common on:Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac trucks and SUVs 2007 to 2017; Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, and Ram 2008 to 2018; some Ford and Lincoln SUVs 2010 to 2016; older Mazda and Subaru models
Typical cost with us:$100 to $250 programmed on-site
Known issues: Known issues: GM remote head keys are sensitive to aftermarket remote-start wiring that corrupts the transponder memory; Chrysler/Dodge/Ram remote head keys have documented TPMS sensor interference during programming on some scan tools; cracked key heads from dropping expose the PCB to moisture.
Flip Key Fob (Switchblade Key)

Flip Key Fob (Switchblade Key)

A fob with a folding mechanical key blade that flips out on spring release. The blade carries the cut profile for mechanical operation and a transponder chip for immobilizer authentication. The fob shell houses the RF transmitter and buttons. Flip keys are popular for their compact carry profile and the protection the folded position gives the key tip. Programming requires two steps: transponder programming to the immobilizer and RF programming to the receiver module. Both must succeed for full function.

Common on:Volkswagen and Audi across most models 2000 to 2020; Ford Focus, Fiesta, and Mustang 2011 to 2019; some Buick, Chevrolet, and Pontiac models 2004 to 2012; Kia and Hyundai entry-level trims 2012 to 2019; Mazda 3 and 6 2009 to 2015
Typical cost with us:$120 to $280 programmed on-site
Known issues: Known issues: VW and Audi flip keys require KESSY module coding on some chassis generations and cannot be programmed with generic tools; the spring pivot mechanism on OEM flip keys fatigues after 50,000 to 80,000 cycles; cheap aftermarket flip key shells use softer plastics that crack under coastal UV exposure; Ford HU101 flip keys cut to incorrect depth specifications by hardware stores cause binding in door locks.

Price Comparison by Brand

Toyota

Toyota

Dealer sources OEM key from Toyota, programs via TIS (Toyota Information System) through secure server connection. Appointment typically 2 to 5 business days out.

Dealer: $280 to $430 including programming

Tim's: $150 to $280 programmed on-site same day

Honda

Honda

Dealer orders Honda OEM key through parts department. HDS (Honda Diagnostic System) programming session required. Keys are VIN-specific and cannot be transferred.

Dealer: $250 to $400 including programming

Tim's: $130 to $250 programmed on-site same day

Ford / GM / Chrysler

Ford / GM / Chrysler

Domestic brands generally have wider availability of aftermarket fobs at good quality. Dealer programming adds to cost but appointment times are shorter than import dealers.

Dealer: $180 to $350 including programming

Tim's: $100 to $220 programmed on-site same day

BMW / Mercedes / Audi

BMW / Mercedes / Audi

Luxury brands use encrypted VIN-based key files requiring OEM diagnostic tools (ISTA, XENTRY, ODIS). OEM fobs only, no quality aftermarket equivalent. We use OEM keys for these brands.

Dealer: $400 to $800 including programming

Tim's: $250 to $380 OEM only, programmed on-site

The Towing Problem

If your fob is the only thing keeping you from starting your car because it also carries the transponder, and the car will not start without it, you face a towing bill on top of the dealer cost. A tow from most Ventura County locations to a dealership runs $75 to $150. A tow in San Diego adds similar cost, plus you may wait at the dealership until they can fit you in the service queue. Our van comes to your car. No tow, no dealer wait, no rental car day.

Wait Times

Dealers book automotive locksmiths and key technicians as service appointments, not walk-ins. The earliest available slot is frequently 2 to 5 business days for common vehicles and longer for luxury imports. If you need your car today, that timeline does not work. We typically arrive same day, often within 1 to 2 hours of your call.

Real example 2019 Camry XSE

A Real Example

A 2019 Camry XSE with push-to-start: the OEM Toyota smart key lists at $245 in parts alone. Toyota's dealer rate for programming is $95 to $145 per key depending on region. Appointment booked for Thursday. Car sits until then. Total dealer cost: $340 to $390, plus any towing if the car won't move. Our cost on the same vehicle: $210 to $260, same day, at your location, tested before we leave.

When the Dealer Is the Right Call

  • Your vehicle requires manufacturer cryptographic server authentication that only OEM tools can access (certain 2022+ models from specific brands)
  • The vehicle has a known module defect covered under warranty that the dealer is handling at no cost
  • You need a brand-specific accessory like a branded key cover or factory illuminated entry feature that only the OEM can supply

OEM vs Aftermarket

Good aftermarket fob quality

What Makes a Good Aftermarket Fob

A quality aftermarket fob uses the same FCC-registered frequency (315 or 433 MHz), matches the OEM rolling code protocol for your vehicle, and is built with a PCB of sufficient quality to maintain signal range and button response for several years of normal use. Brands like Keyless2Go, OEM-spec Strattec, and Ilco-sourced aftermarket keys meet these standards. A properly programmed quality aftermarket fob is indistinguishable in daily use from an OEM unit.

Bad aftermarket fob warning

What Makes a Bad One

A bad aftermarket fob undercuts on the PCB, uses lower-quality frequency crystals that drift over time and cause intermittent range loss, uses button membranes that degrade within 6 to 18 months, and may have housing plastics that crack or warp in heat. These show up on discount sites for $12 to $25. The cost of the wasted programming session and the replacement fob afterward exceeds what a quality unit costs up front. We do not carry these.

What we use OEM spec aftermarket

What We Use

We stock OEM-spec aftermarket fobs from vetted suppliers for the majority of domestic and Asian vehicles. For luxury European vehicles (BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, Land Rover), we source OEM keys because no aftermarket equivalent exists that reliably handles their encrypted key files. We tell you which category your vehicle falls into before we start, so there are no surprises.

Luxury OEM keycard server note

Luxury OEM Note

Luxury OEM note: BMW, Mercedes, and Audi key programming requires OEM keycards and server-authenticated sessions in many cases. We carry the tools to handle this, but the key itself must be OEM. We will source it and program it. Expect the higher end of our pricing range for these vehicles.

Common Key Fob Problems

Signs You Just Need a Battery

  • Fob works at 2 feet but not at 20 feet (reduced range is the classic early battery symptom)
  • Car requires multiple button presses before responding
  • Dashboard shows a key battery warning light
  • Smart key works but proximity unlock is slower than usual
  • Fob worked after you pressed it against the door handle or start button (emergency low-battery bypass)
  • Battery was last changed more than 2 years ago and usage is daily

Signs You Need Full Replacement

  • Battery was just replaced and range is still poor (internal PCB or antenna failure)
  • One or more buttons physically collapsed or no longer click
  • Housing cracked and fob was exposed to moisture or dropped in water
  • Fob was demagnetized or corrupted from proximity to strong magnets
  • Vehicle will not recognize fob at all even with key near the start button (programming loss)
  • Multiple fobs on the same car stopped working simultaneously (receiver module failure, not fob failure)

Brand-Specific Issues

Nissan / Infiniti

Nissan / Infiniti

Intelligent Key BCM (Body Control Module) faults are common on 2007 to 2013 Altimas and Rogues. The BCM may stop registering new fobs without a specific reset procedure. We carry the scanner required. Also: Nissan fob battery drain is accelerated by keeping the fob too close to phones or tablets.

Chrysler / Dodge / Ram

Chrysler / Dodge / Ram

TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module) faults on 2007 to 2016 Ram trucks and Grand Cherokees can mimic fob failure. The TIPM may fail to send the unlock signal even when the receiver gets the RF transmission correctly. Diagnosis before fob replacement can save the cost of a new fob that will not solve the underlying issue.

Toyota / Lexus

Toyota / Lexus

Toyota Generation 3 smart keys (2018+ RAV4, Camry, Avalon) have documented issues with phantom door locking in certain parking conditions caused by the passive entry polling loop. Updating the certification module firmware (dealer service) resolves this. The fob itself is not the problem.

GM / Chevrolet

GM / Chevrolet

RPO B5A (passive entry) vehicles from 2015 to 2020 occasionally erase all programmed fobs during certain OBDII diagnostic sessions run without a retained key present. Always have at least one working key retained during any module scan. We verify this before programming.

Ford / Lincoln

Ford / Lincoln

Ford Intelligent Access antennas in 2015 to 2018 F-150 and 2016 to 2019 Explorer are routed near trailer hitch wiring. Corrosion in the trailer connector causes ground loops that interfere with passive entry. The fob reads as out of range even when you are standing next to the door. Fob replacement will not fix this.

Protecting Your Fob in Ventura County

Coastal corrosion fob damage

Coastal Corrosion

Salt air accelerates corrosion of fob contacts, PCB traces, and battery terminals. Fobs carried to the beach accumulate fine salt particles inside the housing through button gaps and seam lines. Once inside, the salt becomes hygroscopic and draws additional moisture, accelerating corrosion of the circuit board. Fobs kept in vehicles parked near the Ventura County waterfront or San Diego coastal neighborhoods typically show shortened battery life and intermittent range before the same fob would fail in an inland environment.

Coastal fob tip

Keep a silicone fob cover on any key carried to the beach. The cover does not block the signal and dramatically reduces salt particle infiltration through button gaps

Coastal fob tip

After beach or boat exposure, wipe the fob with a barely damp cloth and dry thoroughly before storage. Do not rinse under running water

Coastal fob tip

Replace fob batteries annually rather than waiting for range degradation in coastal environments. Dead batteries leak acid onto the PCB contacts

Coastal fob tip

If a fob was submerged or heavily wet, remove the battery immediately, let the internals dry for 48 hours in a low-humidity environment, and test before assuming it is dead

Inland heat fob damage

Inland Heat

Inland heat affects fob button membranes (the silicone rubber layer under each button). Sustained temperatures above 140 degrees Fahrenheit, which occurs on dashboards in the Conejo Valley and Simi Valley in summer, causes the membrane to stiffen and lose its tactile feedback over time. The PCB solder joints also experience thermal cycling stress. Fobs left on the dashboard or inside closed vehicles in direct sun in inland Ventura County and East San Diego County will have a shortened service life.

Heat fob tip

Do not leave your fob on the dashboard or in direct sun inside a parked car in summer months

If the fob has a key ring loop, store it in the glove box or center console when not in use rather than hanging from the sun visor

Heat fob tip

Button membranes that have become stiff from heat exposure can sometimes be restored by gently cleaning with isopropyl alcohol and allowing the silicone to recover at room temperature, but heavily heat-degraded membranes require full housing replacement

Key Fob Replacement Pricing

Standard Remote Fob

$80 to $180

One-way RF fob for keyless entry only. Most domestic and older Asian vehicles. Does not start the car.

Remote Head Key

$100 to $250

Integrated blade, transponder, and RF remote. GM, Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, and Jeep platforms primarily. Both transponder and remote programmed.

Flip Key Fob

$120 to $280

Switchblade key with built-in remote. VW, Audi, Ford, and some GM applications. Full transponder and RF programming included.

Smart Key Fob (Push-to-Start)

$150 to $350

Proximity key with passive entry and push-start. Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Ford, GM, Hyundai, Kia, and most current vehicles. Most complex programming.

Why the Range? Range reflects vehicle security complexity, fob cost (OEM versus quality aftermarket), and whether existing keys are retained or this is an all-keys-lost scenario. Smart keys on European luxury brands run higher because OEM keys are required. All prices include programming, button testing, and battery installation. We quote before we start.
