Safe Combination Changes in Ventura County
Whether you inherited a safe you can't trust, just went through a divorce, or fired an employee last Friday who knew the code, your combination needs to change. We handle mechanical dial locks, electronic keypads, and dual-access (key + combo) safe locks across every major brand. One visit, new combination set and tested, documentation provided. The safe stays open the entire time until we've verified the new combo works perfectly, no guessing, no callbacks.
When to Change Your Combination

Someone You No Longer Trust Has the Combination
Former employees, ex-spouses, old roommates, estranged family members. If anyone who previously had access to your combination is no longer someone you trust, change the combination immediately. A combination is not like a key you can take back. Once someone knows the numbers, they know them forever unless you change them.

You Bought a Used Safe
Used safes from estate sales, Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or business liquidations come with unknown history. The previous owner, the previous owner's employees, the moving company, and anyone who helped with the sale may know the combination. Change it before storing anything valuable inside.

You Inherited a Safe
Inherited safes often come with no combination at all, or a combination written on a slip of paper that has been passed through multiple hands. Even if the safe is already open, change the combination so only you know the new one. If the safe is closed and you do not have the combination, we open it first, then change the combo.

The Safe Still Has the Factory Default
Every electronic safe ships with a factory default combination. These defaults are published in owner manuals, YouTube videos, and online forums. Common factory defaults include 1-2-3-4-5-6, 1-5-9, and the last six digits of the serial number. If you never changed the factory code, anyone with five minutes and a search engine can open your safe.

California Firearm Storage Law (January 2026)
California Penal Code Section 25100-25245 requires firearms to be stored in a locked container or secured with a locking device. If you are using a safe to comply with this requirement, the combination must be known only to authorized adults in the household. A safe with a shared or default combination does not provide compliant storage. We change the combination and verify proper locking function so your storage meets the legal standard.

It Has Been More Than a Year
Even without a specific security event, changing your safe combination annually is good practice. Combinations can be observed over time through shoulder surfing, written notes that get discovered, or employees who share codes with coworkers. An annual change limits the window of exposure. For businesses, quarterly changes are recommended for cash-handling and controlled-substance safes.

You Had a Security Incident
If someone attempted to break into your safe, your business was burglarized, your home was broken into, or you suspect someone has been accessing your safe without permission, change the combination immediately. Even if the safe was not opened during the incident, the attacker may have observed the combination or obtained partial information that could help them on a future attempt.

Types of Combination Changes

Mechanical Dial Combination Change
Mechanical dial locks use a change key, a small key inserted into the back of the lock while the safe door is open. The change key releases the wheel pack so new combination numbers can be set. The process involves dialing the existing combination, inserting the change key, setting each wheel to the new number, removing the change key, and testing the new combination multiple times.
One important detail: mechanical dial locks have a "forbidden zone", a range of numbers that cannot be used because they overlap with the lock's internal fence position. The forbidden zone is typically the last 20% of the dial on either side of the final number. We know where the forbidden zone falls on every lock brand we service and pick new numbers outside of it.

Electronic Keypad Combination Change
Electronic keypad locks store the master code and user codes in digital memory. Changing the combination requires entering the current master code, pressing a programming sequence, and entering the new code. The exact key sequence varies by brand: S&G locks use a "0-0" programming entry, SecuRam locks use a "0-0" or "74" sequence, and LaGard locks use a "1" prefix. We know the programming sequences for every electronic safe lock brand.
Electronic locks have a code hierarchy: the master code (also called manager or supervisor code) controls all user codes. If you only need one person's access changed, we can add, change, or delete individual user codes without affecting the master. If the master code itself needs to change, we perform a Manager Reset Code (MRC) procedure or a full master reset depending on the lock brand.

Manager/Master Code Reset (Commercial Multi-User)
Commercial safes with multiple user codes often need a full code table reset rather than a single combination change. This happens when you are not sure which codes are active, multiple employees have left without their codes being deleted, or the code table has become disorganized over time. We reset the master code, delete all existing user codes, and reprogram a clean code table with only the users you authorize.
For safes with audit trail locks (S&G Titan, SecuRam ProLogic, LaGard Auditcon), we can pull the audit log before resetting so you have a record of all access events under the old code table. After the reset, we test every new code with the door open and verify the audit trail is recording the new code positions correctly.

Gun Safe Combination Changes
Gun safes are the single most common safe type we change combinations on. Most gun safes in Ventura County use either a mechanical S&G Group 2 dial or an electronic keypad (SecuRam, S&G, or AMSEC ESL). The combination change process is the same as any other safe, but gun safes have a few extra considerations.
Mechanical dial gun safes (common on Liberty, Fort Knox, and older AMSEC models) require the change key process described above. Electronic keypad gun safes (common on newer Liberty, Browning, Cannon, and Winchester models) use the keypad programming sequence. If you are not sure which type you have, look at the front of the safe: a round numbered dial means mechanical, a keypad with buttons means electronic.

New Gun Safe Setup
You just bought a new gun safe and need the factory default combination changed before storing firearms. We change the combination, test the locking bolt, and verify the door seals properly.

Inherited Gun Collection
You inherited firearms along with a safe. The combination may be unknown, or known by people who should no longer have access. We open the safe if needed, change the combination, and document the new settings.

Divorce or Separation
When a household splits and firearms need to remain secure, the combination must be changed so only the authorized owner has access. We handle this discreetly and provide documentation of the change.

Teenager in the House
As children grow into teenagers, safe access becomes a safety priority. If your teenager has seen you enter the combination over the years, it is time to change it. We can also install a lock with a hidden or relocated keypad if visual observation is a concern.

Moving to a New Home
After a move, movers and helpers may have observed the combination during transport. Change the combination after the safe is in its final position. We also check that the bolts and handle function correctly after the move, since safes can shift during transit.
Relocker Warning
Important: Some gun safes have a relocker mechanism. A relocker is a spring-loaded device that permanently locks the bolt work if the safe lock is attacked (drilled, punched, or tampered with). If a relocker fires during a combination change, which only happens if someone tries to force the lock rather than using the proper procedure, the safe becomes extremely difficult and expensive to open. This is why combination changes should always be done by a trained locksmith. We know where the relocker is on every major gun safe brand and take precautions to avoid triggering it.

Commercial Combination Changes
Business safes need combination changes more frequently than residential safes because employee turnover creates ongoing access control issues. Every time an employee with safe access leaves the company, their combination should be changed or their user code deleted. Here are the main commercial categories we service.

Cash-Handling Businesses
Restaurants, retail stores, and gas stations with drop safes or cash management safes. Insurance carriers often require that combinations be changed whenever an employee with access is terminated, and at minimum annually. Failure to change the combination after a termination can void your theft coverage. We provide documentation showing the date of the change and that the new combination was tested, which satisfies most insurance audit requirements.

Pharmacy / DEA Compliance
Pharmacies storing Schedule II-V controlled substances under DEA 21 CFR 1301.72 must maintain proper access control for safes and vaults. When a pharmacist or technician with safe access leaves, their access must be revoked. For electronic locks, we delete their user code and provide an updated code table. For mechanical dial safes, we change the combination. Class 5 containers and safes with time-delay locks require additional steps, we handle the time delay reprogramming as part of the combination change.

Cannabis Dispensaries / DCC Regulations
California Department of Cannabis Control regulations require that cannabis products be stored in a UL-listed safe or vault when the facility is closed. The combination must be controlled so only authorized personnel have access. When an employee with access leaves, failing to change the combination or revoke their code creates a compliance gap that can surface during DCC inspections. We change combinations and update user code tables the same day an employee departs.

General Business and Office Safes
Offices with safes for cash, documents, or valuables need combination changes after employee turnover, management changes, or security incidents. We handle single-code and multi-user code safes for businesses of all sizes. For offices with multiple safes, we change all combinations in a single visit to minimize disruption.
What We Provide for Businesses
- Written documentation of the combination change with date, time, and lock type
- Updated user code table (for electronic locks with multiple users)
- Verification that all old codes have been deleted or the old dial combination no longer works
- Full open/close testing with the new combination before we leave
- Recommendations for change frequency based on your business type and insurance requirements

Coastal Hardware and Maintenance
Safes in coastal areas across Ventura County face environmental challenges that can affect combination changes and ongoing lock performance. Salt air, humidity, and temperature fluctuations cause specific problems for both mechanical and electronic safe locks.

Mechanical Dial Binding
Salt air and humidity cause corrosion on the internal wheel pack and drive cam of mechanical dial locks. The dial becomes stiff, gritty, or hard to turn. During a combination change, we clean and lubricate the wheel pack so the new combination dials smoothly. If the internal components are corroded beyond cleaning, we replace the lock as part of the service call.

Electronic Keypad Corrosion
Battery contacts, membrane keypad traces, and solenoid plungers corrode in salt air environments. We inspect these components during every combination change and clean or replace corroded parts. We recommend lithium batteries (which resist humidity better than alkaline) and a thin coat of dielectric grease on battery contacts.

Bolt and Hinge Rust
While not directly related to the combination, we inspect the bolt work and hinges during every service call. Corroded bolts can seize in the locked or unlocked position. Corroded hinges make the door difficult to open or close. We lubricate bolt work and hinges as part of a combination change visit at no extra charge.

Recommendation: Desiccant and Upgrades
For safes in coastal homes, we recommend placing a rechargeable desiccant pack inside the safe to reduce internal humidity. For safes with older mechanical dials showing corrosion, upgrading to a sealed electronic keypad (like the S&G Titan with its sealed housing) reduces future corrosion issues. We can discuss upgrade options during your combination change appointment.

Pro Tips for Safe Owners

Always Test with the Door Open
After a combination change, test the new combination 3-5 times with the safe door open before closing it. If the new combination does not work, you can still access the lock to troubleshoot. Closing the door on an untested combination is the number one cause of unnecessary lockout calls.

Store the Combination in a Separate Secure Location
Write the new combination down and store it somewhere other than inside the safe it opens. A fireproof document bag at a relative's house, a safe deposit box at your bank, or a sealed envelope in a separate locked location all work. Do not store the combination in your phone, in a note on your desk, or taped to the bottom of the safe.

Do Not Pick Obvious Numbers
Avoid birthdays, anniversaries, addresses, phone numbers, and repeating patterns (like 25-50-75). For mechanical dials, the numbers should be at least 10 digits apart from each other. For electronic keypads, avoid sequential patterns (1-2-3-4-5-6) and repeated digits (5-5-5-5-5-5).

Dead Battery Does Not Mean Lost Combination
If your electronic safe stops responding to keypad presses, the most likely cause is a dead 9V battery. Replace the battery and your existing combination will still work. The combination is stored in non-volatile memory that survives battery changes. Do not call a locksmith for a dead battery, just replace it and try your code.

Factory Codes Are Public Knowledge
Factory default codes for every major safe brand are available online. If you never changed your factory code, your safe is not secure. This includes the default "1-2-3-4-5-6" used by SentrySafe, the "1-5-9" used by some AMSEC models, and the serial-number-based defaults on Liberty safes. Change the factory code immediately after purchase.

Bolt Your Safe Down (Earthquake Country)
This is not about combinations, but we mention it on every safe call in Ventura County: bolt your safe to the floor or wall. California is earthquake country. An unbolted safe can tip over during a quake, damaging the bolt work or lock mechanism. A tipped safe with a jammed bolt is significantly more expensive to service than a standard combination change. We carry concrete anchors and lag bolts and can secure your safe during the same visit.
