Mailbox Lock Services in Ventura County
Locked out of your mailbox? Need a new lock? We service all types of residential and cluster mailbox locks.
Professional Mailbox Lock Services
Mailbox locks take more abuse than most people realize. Keys break off inside the cylinder, tumblers seize from rain and coastal humidity, and the small keyway fills with grit until the key barely turns. Most residential mailboxes use a standard C9100 or C9200 cam lock, a simple, inexpensive lock that is easy to replace when you know what you are doing and frustrating when you do not. We carry both styles in the van along with blank keys, extraction tools, and the hardware to open your mailbox without damage and get a working lock back in place the same visit.
Every Mailbox Type Covered
We service individual curbside mailboxes, cluster box units (CBUs) in planned communities, apartment mailbox banks, and parcel lockers. Our van is stocked with USPS-approved replacement locks, cam locks in multiple sizes, and the tools to handle broken key extraction, lock replacement, rekeying, and hinge repair. One visit, one trip, done.

Types of Mailbox Lock Services
-
Individual Curbside Mailbox
The standard residential mailbox at the curb or mounted on your house. These typically use a small cam lock (C9100 or C9200) that is held in place with a retaining clip or nut on the inside of the door. When the key breaks or the lock seizes, we open the mailbox non-destructively, remove the old lock, and install a new one with fresh keys. The whole job takes about 15-20 minutes. We carry multiple cam lock sizes because not all mailboxes use the same length cam, the wrong size means the lock turns but does not actually latch.
-
Cluster Box Unit (CBU)
Cluster box units are the multi-compartment mailbox stations found in newer subdivisions, townhome communities, and planned developments. Each tenant compartment has its own cam lock, and the entire unit is owned and maintained by the USPS or the HOA/developer depending on the installation. We replace individual tenant locks with USPS-approved hardware. Important: the master arrow lock on a CBU is USPS property and can only be serviced by the postal service. We handle tenant locks only and coordinate with your HOA or property manager if needed.
-
Apartment Mailbox Bank
Apartment mailbox banks are built into the wall or lobby of multi-unit buildings. Each unit has a small cam lock, and the master door is controlled by the building manager or postal service. We replace individual unit locks, rekey locks when tenants move out, and handle broken key extractions. For property managers, we offer multi-unit service where we rekey or replace all tenant locks in a single visit, providing a new key set for each unit and a master list for building management.
-
Parcel Locker Lock
Parcel lockers are the larger compartments in cluster box units and apartment mailbox banks used for package delivery. These use a different lock mechanism than the individual mail compartments, typically a larger cam lock or a combination lock with a one-time-use key left by the carrier. When the parcel lock jams, the key does not work, or the mechanism fails, we can open the locker and repair or replace the lock. Note: some parcel locker locks are USPS-controlled arrow locks and cannot be serviced by a private locksmith. We will tell you before we start if that is the case.

Coastal Mailbox Hardware Guide
Mailboxes within a few miles of the coast take a beating from salt fog, ocean moisture, and marine air. The lock is usually the first thing to fail because the small keyway traps salt and moisture inside the cylinder where you cannot see it until the key stops turning.
Zinc and brass cam locks
Standard zinc cam locks develop white oxide buildup inside the cylinder within 12-18 months of coastal exposure. Brass holds up longer but still corrodes internally if not lubricated. By the time the key feels stiff, the pins are already pitting.
304 stainless steel
304 stainless resists surface corrosion well, but in direct salt spray environments it can develop tea staining and minor pitting over time. Acceptable for mailboxes a few miles inland, but not ideal for beachfront or harbor-adjacent locations.
Painted and powder-coated housings
The mailbox housing itself is usually painted steel or aluminum. Once the coating chips or scratches, rust starts underneath and spreads. Coastal mailboxes should be inspected annually for coating damage, especially around hinges and lock cutouts where metal-on-metal contact wears through the finish.
What we recommend instead
- 316 marine-grade stainless steel cam locks for beachfront and harbor-adjacent mailboxes
- PVD-coated (Physical Vapor Deposition) lock cylinders that resist salt corrosion better than standard plating
- Stainless steel mounting screws to replace the zinc-plated screws that come standard on most mailboxes
- Stainless steel strike plates and retaining hardware to prevent galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals
We stock coastal-rated mailbox hardware in the van. If your mailbox is within a few miles of the water and you are replacing a lock anyway, upgrading to marine-grade hardware costs a few dollars more and lasts years longer.

Mail Security: What You Should Know
The USPS Office of Inspector General received over 250,000 mail theft complaints in the most recent reporting year.
447 USPS Arrow keys were stolen in a single year, each Arrow key opens every collection box and cluster box unit on an entire mail route.
What this means for you
Mail theft is not just about someone grabbing a birthday card. Stolen mail provides access to bank statements, tax documents, checks, credit card offers, and personal information used for identity theft. Cluster box units and apartment mailbox banks are frequent targets because one forced lock gives access to dozens of mailboxes at once.
Our recommendation
If your mailbox lock is broken, missing, or easy to defeat, replace it now rather than later. A working lock with a fresh cylinder is the most basic and effective layer of mail security. For higher-risk locations, we offer high-security cam lock options with restricted keyways that cannot be picked or bumped with standard tools.
How to report mail theft
If you believe your mail has been stolen, report it to the USPS Postal Inspection Service at 1-877-876-2455 or online at uspis.gov. File a report even if you are not certain, it helps investigators identify patterns and serial offenders in your area.

Pro Tips for Mailbox Locks
Graphite, Not WD-40
WD-40 is a solvent, not a lubricant. It will temporarily free a sticky mailbox lock, but it attracts dust and grit into the small keyway and gums up the pins within weeks. Use dry graphite powder or a PTFE-based lock spray. A small puff into the keyway once or twice a year keeps the cylinder turning smoothly.
Do Not Force a Stiff Key
If your mailbox key is getting harder to turn, do not force it. Forcing a stiff key is the number one cause of broken keys in mailbox locks. The key snaps off inside the cylinder, and now you need extraction plus a new lock instead of just a quick rekey or lubrication. If the key resists, stop and call us.
Check Your Mailbox Daily
An overflowing mailbox signals to mail thieves that no one is watching. It also puts stress on the lock and door mechanism from the weight and pressure of accumulated mail pushing against the door. If you are traveling, ask a neighbor to collect your mail or put a hold on delivery through USPS.
Inspect After Any Break-In Attempt
If you notice pry marks, scratches around the lock, or a door that does not sit flush anymore, have the lock inspected even if it still opens. A lock that was pried or forced may still turn with a key but could be compromised internally, pins damaged, cylinder cracked, or the cam bent so the lock no longer holds securely.
Coastal Mailboxes Need Monthly Attention
If your mailbox is within a mile of the ocean, wipe down the lock and surrounding hardware with a damp cloth once a month to remove salt residue. Apply a light coat of dry graphite to the keyway. This five-minute routine extends the life of your mailbox lock by years.
