Key Programming in Ventura County

Transponder keys, smart keys, and key fobs all need to be programmed to your vehicle's immobilizer system before they'll start your car. We program keys on-site using dealer-level diagnostic equipment. No tow truck. No dealer appointment. No waiting days for a part to come in.

Mobile locksmith providing key programming service

Professional Car Key Programming

Our mobile van covers virtually every vehicle make and model, arriving at your home, office, or roadside location with professional key programming equipment on board. We handle both add-key situations (where you still have at least one working key) and all-keys-lost scenarios where every key has been misplaced, stolen, or broken. In all-keys-lost cases, no working key is required to create and program a new set.

Done in a Single Visit

Most jobs are completed in a single visit. We cut the new key blade on-site using our code-cutting equipment, program the transponder or smart key chip, verify remote functions if applicable, and test everything at the vehicle before we collect payment. You drive away the same visit with a fully functional key.

How It Works

Call and Describe Your Situation

Tell us your year, make, model, and how many working keys you currently have. This tells us whether you need an add-key procedure or an all-keys-lost procedure. Have your VIN ready if possible, it speeds up key blank identification.

Pro tip: Your VIN is on the dashboard at the base of the windshield (driver side) and on your registration card. It is 17 characters and identifies your exact vehicle configuration.

We Come to Your Location

Our mobile van arrives with key cutting machines, a full blank inventory, and OBD-II diagnostic tools for most makes. We connect to your vehicle, pull the necessary security data, and cut or obtain the correct blank before programming begins.

Program, Test, and Drive

We program the new key or fob, verify every button function, and test the key in the ignition before we leave. For push-to-start vehicles, we confirm the vehicle starts with the new key inside the cabin. Payment is collected after everything passes.

How Key Programming Actually Works

OBD-II Port ProgrammingMost Common

OBD-II Port Programming

The most common method for vehicles made after 1996. We connect a professional diagnostic tool to the OBD-II port under the dash, access the body control module or immobilizer system directly, and write the new key's transponder ID into the authorized key list. This method works for transponder keys, smart keys, and fobs on most domestic and Asian makes. It is non-invasive, fast (10 to 25 minutes typically), and requires no dismantling of any vehicle components.

Module-Level Bench ProgrammingEuropean and Specialty

Module-Level Bench Programming

Some vehicles, particularly European makes and newer models with encrypted key systems, require the immobilizer control module to be removed and programmed on a bench using specialized EEPROM or JTAG tools. This method reads and writes the module memory directly, bypassing the vehicle's normal communication channel. It is more time-intensive and requires deeper access to the vehicle, but it handles programming situations that OBD-II tools cannot reach. We use this approach for BMW, Mercedes, and select Volkswagen and Audi models where standard OBD access is blocked.

On-Board Manual ProgrammingOlder Vehicles

On-Board Manual Programming

Many vehicles from the late 1990s through mid-2000s include a manual on-board programming sequence. The procedure typically involves a specific sequence of key turns, door opens and closes, or button presses using an existing working key, which puts the vehicle into programming mode for a new key. This method only works if you have at least one working key and the vehicle's system supports it. It requires no external tools. We use it when applicable because it is fast, reliable, and keeps costs down for the customer.

Types of Key Programming

  • Transponder Keys

    Transponder Keys

A transponder key has a small chip embedded in the plastic head. When you insert the key and turn the ignition, the vehicle's antenna ring reads a radio frequency signal from the chip. If the chip ID matches what the immobilizer has on record, the engine starts. If not, the vehicle cranks but will not fire. We program transponder chips by writing the correct cryptographic ID to the key and registering it with the immobilizer. This is the most common type of key we program and covers the vast majority of vehicles from 2000 onward.

  • Smart Keys and Push-to-Start Fobs

    Smart Keys and Push-to-Start Fobs

Smart keys use low-frequency radio to communicate continuously with the vehicle. As long as the key is in the passenger compartment, the car recognizes it and allows push-button starting. Programming requires authenticating the smart key's internal transponder with the vehicle's body control module and establishing the rolling-code pairing for the remote functions. Some vehicles require all existing smart keys to be present during programming, we will advise you before starting if this applies to your car.

  • Key Fobs (Remote Only)

    Key Fobs (Remote Only)

A key fob controls lock, unlock, panic, and sometimes trunk or remote start functions without starting the car. Fob programming links the fob's rolling security code with the vehicle's receiver module. Most fob programming is quick and does not require cutting a key blade unless the fob also includes a hidden emergency key blade. We carry fob inventory for most makes and can usually program your replacement fob the same day we arrive.

  • Flip Keys

    Flip Keys

A flip key (also called a switchblade key) folds the key blade into the fob housing when not in use. The fob body contains both a transponder chip and remote buttons, making it a combined key-and-fob unit. Programming involves both transponder registration and remote code pairing. Common in Volkswagen, Kia, Hyundai, Chevrolet Camaro, and others. We cut and program flip keys on-site for most common vehicles.

  • Remote Head Keys

    Remote Head Keys

A remote head key has a fixed, non-folding blade attached directly to a large plastic head that contains the remote buttons and transponder chip. Common in GM vehicles, Chrysler, and some Ford models from the 2000s through 2015 era. The key is cut to the correct key code and then programmed via OBD-II. Because the transponder and remote are in the same housing, one programming session handles both functions simultaneously.

Locksmith vs Dealer

CategoryMobile Locksmith (Us)Dealership
CostTypically $100 to $400 depending on key type and vehicle. No shop fees, no dealer markups on parts. You pay for the key and the programming labor, nothing else.Typically $250 to $600 or more for the same key. Parts are billed at retail, and most dealers add a programming diagnostic fee on top. Smart keys for luxury vehicles can exceed $500 at the dealer.
SpeedSame-day service, usually within 1 to 3 hours of your call. We come to your location. No appointment needed for most vehicles.Appointments often scheduled days out. Some dealers require leaving the vehicle overnight for key programming, especially for all-keys-lost situations.
AvailabilityOpen daily. We work weekends, evenings, and holidays. If you lose your only key on a Sunday, we can be there the same day.Service departments typically operate Monday through Friday, 7:30AM to 5:30PM. Weekend and evening service is rare. Holiday availability is almost nonexistent.
EquipmentWe use the same OBD-II diagnostic platforms used by professional locksmiths worldwide. Coverage is comparable to dealer tools for most domestic and Asian vehicles.Dealer tools are OEM-specific and always current for their brand. Dealers have an edge on brand-new model years and proprietary systems that have not yet been reverse-engineered.

When You Actually Need the Dealer

In most situations, a licensed locksmith with professional equipment does the job just as well as the dealer at significantly lower cost. The cases where the dealer is the right choice: a vehicle that came off the lot within the last 6 to 12 months with a brand-new, uncracked security system; certain Tesla models (software-locked, app-based key system); and rare import vehicles with no aftermarket tool coverage. We will tell you honestly if your vehicle falls into one of these categories when you call.

Key Programming by Brand

Toyota and Lexus

Toyota and Lexus

Toyota has used several generations of transponder and smart key systems. Most 2003 and later Toyotas use 4D or 4C chips that we program via OBD-II. G-chip and H-chip systems on newer models require specialized emulator tools we carry in stock. Lexus smart keys follow the same Toyota platform. All-keys-lost on Toyota requires a 20-minute security relearn procedure that we handle on-site.

Typical cost range: $120 to $280
Honda and Acura

Honda and Acura

Honda uses proprietary key programming that requires a dealer-level J2534 pass-through interface. We carry Honda-compatible programming software for most models from 2001 onward. Honda all-keys-lost (particularly the 2010 and later systems) requires a 30-minute EEPROM or online programming procedure. Acura NSX, RDX, and MDX smart keys follow Honda's smart key architecture.

Typical cost range: $130 to $300
Ford and Lincoln

Ford and Lincoln

Ford uses the PATS (Passive Anti-Theft System) transponder system on most vehicles since 1996. Adding a key requires two working keys for older PATS systems, if you only have one key, we can complete the programming using a diagnostic bypass. Ford push-to-start smart keys (2011 and later Explorer, Edge, Fusion, F-150) program via OBD-II without the two-key restriction. Lincoln follow the same Ford platform.

Typical cost range: $120 to $320
General Motors (Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Cadillac)

General Motors (Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Cadillac)

GM vehicles from 1997 onward use the VATS and later Passlock and Passkey immobilizer systems, transitioning to transponder systems in the mid-2000s. Modern GM smart keys (2013 and later) use proximity-based programming via the BCM. Remote head keys for Silverado, Tahoe, and Suburban are among the most common keys we program in Ventura County.

Typical cost range: $110 to $260
Hyundai and Kia

Hyundai and Kia

Hyundai and Kia share key programming platforms. Most 2007 and later models use transponder keys that program in under 10 minutes via OBD-II. Flip keys (switchblade style) are common on Elantra, Sonata, and Optima. Smart keys for Tucson, Santa Fe, Telluride, Sorento, and Sportage program easily on modern equipment. PIN-based programming is required for some all-keys-lost situations.

Typical cost range: $100 to $240
Nissan and Infiniti

Nissan and Infiniti

Nissan uses a smartcard-based system on many newer models that requires an authorized dealer for full programming. For most Altima, Sentra, Maxima, Pathfinder, and Murano models through 2015, we program keys directly via OBD-II. Infiniti Q50 and QX60 smart keys use proximity programming that is fully supported by our equipment. Nissan all-keys-lost for push-to-start models requires a BCM PIN extraction procedure.

Typical cost range: $120 to $290
Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram

Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram

FCA vehicles use the SKREEM immobilizer and later the NextGen security system on trucks and SUVs. Most Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ram 1500, Dodge Charger, and Chrysler 300 models program via OBD-II. All-keys-lost on 2013 and later FCA vehicles requires a dealer account or a locksmith NASTF portal credential, we are registered and can handle this procedure. Flip key fobs for Jeep Wrangler are a high-volume item we keep in stock.

Typical cost range: $120 to $310
Volkswagen and Audi

Volkswagen and Audi

VW and Audi use MEGAMOS and later MEGAMOS Crypto transponder systems that require VCDS or OBD-level access for programming. Flip keys for Golf, Jetta, Passat, and Tiguan program in 10 to 20 minutes. Audi A4, A6, and Q5 smart keys require component security login access. Audi MQB platform (2015 and later A3, Q3, Q5) uses advanced encryption that requires either dealer credentials or EEPROM-level programming.

Typical cost range: $160 to $420
BMW

BMW

BMW uses EWS (Electronic Wheel Immobilizer) on older models through 2006, transitioning to CAS (Car Access System) on the E-Series and then FEM/BDC on F-Series and G-Series. EWS programming is straightforward. CAS and FEM programming requires module-level access or dealer credentials via online server. We handle EWS and most CAS programming on-site. F and G series BMW (2012 and later) typically require dealer involvement or module bench work.

Typical cost range: $200 to $500
Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes uses the EIS (Electronic Ignition Switch) and later ESL system. Older W210 and W220 (1995 to 2006) are programmable with specialist equipment. W212 E-Class and W204 C-Class (2006 to 2014) require EIS work that we handle with AUTEL or CGDI tools. The newer W205 and W213 platforms use an online Mercedes security server that is dealer-locked. We can advise which generation your vehicle falls under when you call.

Typical cost range: $220 to $600
Tesla

Tesla

Tesla does not use a traditional key or immobilizer system. Access is controlled via the Tesla mobile app, paired keycards, and optional key fobs. All key management is done through the app, if you lose access to your Tesla account, you must contact Tesla support directly. This is one situation where a locksmith cannot help with the programming side. We can still help with Tesla physical lockouts through other methods.

Locksmith cannot program Tesla keys. Tesla app and support only
Subaru

Subaru

Subaru uses a straightforward transponder system through most of its lineup. Impreza, Outback, Forester, Legacy, and Crosstrek transponder keys program via OBD-II quickly. Smart keys on the 2016 and later Outback and Forester require a proximity sync procedure after OBD programming. All-keys-lost on Subaru is handled the same as add-key on most models, no additional security bypass is needed.

Typical cost range: $100 to $220

Cloned vs Programmed Keys

Cloned Keys

Cloned Keys

A cloned key copies the transponder signal from an existing working key onto a new chip. The new chip emits the same fixed ID code as the original, so the immobilizer sees two identical signals. Cloning works on older systems that use fixed-code transponders (pre-2005 era on most brands). The advantage is speed, cloning takes 2 to 3 minutes with a chip duplicator and does not require communicating with the vehicle at all. The limitation is that cloning only works on fixed-code chips, not rolling-code or encrypted transponders found in most vehicles after 2005.

Programmed Keys

Programmed Keys

A programmed key does not copy an existing signal. Instead, the new key is assigned its own unique cryptographic ID by the vehicle's immobilizer system during a programming session. The immobilizer writes the new key into its authorized list. Both the original key and the new key work independently, each with their own ID. This is the correct approach for all rolling-code, encrypted, and smart key systems. It is also the only valid method for all-keys-lost situations where there is no working key to clone from.

A Note About Key Kiosks

A Note About Key Kiosks

Hardware stores and some auto parts chains operate self-service key duplication kiosks that can copy basic mechanical keys and some older transponder keys. These machines work by cutting the blade profile and in some cases cloning a fixed-code chip. They do not connect to your vehicle. They cannot program rolling-code keys, smart keys, or any encrypted system. If the machine says it can duplicate your key but the vehicle does not start, the mechanical cut matched but the chip was not properly cloned or matched to your system. Bring the original key and the failed copy to us and we can diagnose whether the chip was copied at all and what the vehicle actually requires.

We use the correct method for your specific vehicle and key type. For older fixed-code systems, cloning is fast and cost-effective. For any system after 2005, we program directly to the vehicle immobilizer. We never guess, and we tell you upfront if your vehicle requires a more advanced procedure.

Pro Tips Before You Call

Check the Key Battery Before Assuming Programming Failed

Check the Key Battery Before Assuming Programming Failed

If your new key fob is not responding, a dead or incorrectly installed battery is the most common cause. Smart keys typically use CR2032 batteries. Check polarity carefully, the plus side must face the correct direction or the key appears completely dead.

Have Your VIN Ready When You Call

Have Your VIN Ready When You Call

Your 17-character VIN allows us to look up the exact key type, blank specification, and programming protocol for your vehicle before we arrive. This eliminates guesswork and means we show up with the correct blank and the correct procedure pre-loaded.

Know Whether You Have All-Keys-Lost

Know Whether You Have All-Keys-Lost

If you have at least one working key, programming an additional key is faster and usually costs less. If all keys are lost, tell us upfront. All-keys-lost requires different tools and additional time for most vehicles. Some brands charge a higher labor rate for all-keys-lost because the security bypass is more involved.

Do Not Attempt DIY Key Programming for Encrypted Systems

Do Not Attempt DIY Key Programming for Encrypted Systems

Free OBD key programming apps and YouTube tutorials work for a small number of older vehicles with no encryption. Attempting to use these on a modern rolling-code or smart key system can lock the immobilizer and require a dealer reset to recover. If in doubt, call us first.

Mention Any Previous Programming Attempts

Mention Any Previous Programming Attempts

If another locksmith, a dealer, or a DIY method was previously attempted on the same vehicle, tell us. Failed programming attempts can change the state of the immobilizer and affect our procedure. We want to know what was tried before we connect our tools.

Get a Spare Key Before You Need One

Get a Spare Key Before You Need One

The best time to get a spare key programmed is when you still have a working key. Add-key programming is faster, simpler, and less expensive than all-keys-lost. Having a spare also means a lost primary key is an inconvenience instead of an emergency.

How to Spot a Locksmith Scam

Key programming emergencies make people vulnerable to predatory pricing and unlicensed operators. These are the five red flags to watch for.

The $19 Bait-and-Switch

Red Flag 1: The $19 Bait-and-Switch

An ad promises a fully programmed key for a shockingly low price. The technician arrives and discovers "complications" that push the total to three or four times the quoted amount. The low number was never real, it was designed to get you to pick up the phone. We quote a final, all-in price before starting any work.

Drilling Without Diagnosis

Red Flag 2: Drilling Without Diagnosis

Some fraudulent operators drill a lock or ignition before attempting any professional entry technique. Drilling should be a last resort, not a first move. If a technician immediately reaches for a drill without first trying professional tools, stop the job.

Fake Google Listings

Red Flag 3: Fake Google Listings

Scam locksmith operations create hundreds of fake local Google Business listings with local phone numbers that forward to a central call center. The technician who shows up is often unlicensed and uninsured. Before you call, check that the business has real reviews, a verifiable license number, and a consistent web presence.

No Questions Asked

Red Flag 4: No Questions Asked

A legitimate locksmith asks about your vehicle, the number of working keys, and whether you are the registered owner before starting key programming. A scammer skips these questions because they do not care about the answers. If no questions are asked, be cautious.

No License When Asked

Red Flag 5: No License When Asked

California requires automotive locksmiths who perform vehicle entry and key programming to be licensed through BSIS. Ask to see the technician's license before they start. Our license number is LCO#7134 and is verifiable on the BSIS website.
